CALIBRATION & METROLOGY
For any manufacturing organization, calibration and metrology are part of everyday life. The ability to measure with the right instruments and be sure that the measurements are accurate is critical to quality control in a manufacturing environment. Any manufacturing quality plan or quality management system includes measures of product and processes and the monitoring of those instruments to ensure they are accurate.
In the planning process for developing a product, metrology is critical to ensure the correct equipment is used to measure both the characteristics that can be inspected on the product and the characteristics that can only be measured in the process. From these determinations the product and process monitoring and measurements are determined to ensure the conformity of both. Understanding the uncertainty of these measurements is also important in the development of tolerances.
Once the organization understands the measurements it will be taking, it then needs to decide how to manage the measurement instruments. Organizations differ in their approaches for calibration but there are a few important aspects that apply to all calibration systems irrespective of how they are implemented: new tool capture and recall system with established recall periods for each type of instrument, calibration of each device, proper storage, handling, and use of measurement devices to ensure their adequacy between calibrations, calibration sources that are ISO 17025 or A2LA certified, instruments are labeled and traceable, a product recall process for products resulting from a process with instruments that failed calibration, and records that demonstrate each instrument’s conformance to standards.
