7 Basic Tools of Quality
Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa was born in Tokyo in 1915. Ishikawa studied chemistry at the University of Tokyo where he later served as a professor. Ishikawa joined the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) and studied the concept of quality circles on which he later wrote two books. Ishikawa’s most notable contribution to quality was the cause and effect diagram also known as the “fishbone diagram”. The cause and effect diagram is one of the common tools used by quality practitioners today in root cause analysis. Ishikawa made efforts to improve quality by impressing upon corporate leaders the importance and benefits of good quality. Dr. Ishikawa received several awards for his many important works among them was the Walter A. Shewhart Medal which he received in 1988, the year before he passed away.
