Philip Crosby was born in Wheeling, WV. June 18 1926. Crosby served in the military during both World War II and Korea after which he worked for Martin-Marietta and ITT. Crosby is best known for his ability to translate quality concepts into everyday language. Terms like “Zero Defect” and “Do it right the first time” came from Philip Crosby and are ingrained in the manufacturing culture. Crosby founded his company Philip Crosby Associates Inc. in 1979; the company provided education and training in quality management. After founding his company, Crosby wrote his first book Quality is Free which promoted the notions of maturing processes, cost of quality, and quality as a business wide practice. Crosby is also known for his “Fourteen Steps to Quality Improvement” and the “Four Absolutes of Quality Management”. Philip Crosby died in Winter Park FL on August 18, 2001.
