QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
What is a QMS? A quality management system (QMS) establishes an organization’s processes into documented procedures, describes the necessary resources, and defines their interactions to ensure and promote customer satisfaction and continual improvement throughout the organization.
Why do I want/need a QMS?
Key Elements of a QMS:
Management: Management has oversight and thus control of policy, procedures, objectives, resources, and execution of all aspects of the QMS. Therefore, management is responsible for establishing objectives, assessing performance, and ensuring that actions are taken to improve and provide customers with the products and services they expect.
Resources: The assignment of resources is vital to the success of the QMS. Resources typically come in three forms: human resources (the right people), infrastructure (proper facilities, equipment, tools, services to execute effectively), and materials/methods (components, raw materials to make product or methods/skills to provide services).
Product Realization: Product realization is the execution of the processes utilizing the resources to generate the products or services provided to the customer. It may include many processes like planning, defining requirements, designing, testing, planning production, purchasing, manufacturing, shipping, etc.
Measurement, Analysis, Improvement: To understand how the QMS is performing and its impact on the customer and the organization, the outputs from the processes must be measured and analyzed in order to understand the inadequacies and weaknesses and take actions to improve them.
