QUALITY PLANNING
Quality Planning is commonly thought of as a business process intended to facilitate the introduction of new projects and processes. The application of quality planning varies by industry, customer, and organization. Some industries have very specific prescriptive methods for quality planning while others have none and only require conformity to requirements without prescribing the methods to get there.
As more and more companies require quality management system certifications (like ISO 9001) from their supply base, more and more companies have developed quality planning methods to comply with the quality management system standards of their industry. In some cases, a company’s quality planning process may consist of simply developing a quality plan for a given product. In other cases, a company may have a defined methodology that spans many facilities, projects, and management teams and establishes requirements for developing products and processes, maintaining quality in operations, managing resources, quality improvement, establishing and/or maintaining objectives.
Regardless of the scale of the quality planning process, the key focus is on fulfilling the requirements of the customer. Some useful tools in quality planning include the use of: QFD, Benchmarking, Kano Model, Best Practices, Cost Benefit Analysis, FMEA, Quality Checklists, Design for Manufacture, Design of Experiments, Flowcharting, Lessons Learned, etc.
