Dr. Shigeo Shingo was born in Saga City, Japan in 1909. Dr. Shingo was an industrial engineer and made several notable contributions to quality and manufacturing practices. Shingo was a major contributor to the Toyota Production System which turned out practices like “Just In Time”, reducing waste (Muda), and mistake proofing (Poka-yoke). Shingo is credited with developing the practice of Poka-yoke and single minute exchange of dies (SMED) also known as quick changeover. Though his ideas were focused on improving process performance, they also contributed to improving quality in a manufacturing setting. In 1988 the Utah State University founded the Shingo Prize which is awarded for excellence in manufacturing. Dr. Shigeo Shingo died 2 years later, in 1990.
