SIX SIGMA

     Six Sigma originates in statistics:  sigma represents standard deviations in a normal distribution and six standard deviations represents a process capable of meeting tolerance 99.99966% of the time.   Of course today, we also associate it with the project oriented problem solving method that applies a logical process to understand a problem or objective and figure out how to correct it and maintain the correction.  The root of this problem solving method lies in the DMAIC process:  Define Measure Analyze Improve and Control.  

     The Six Sigma process utilizes a host of tools during the DMAIC cycle to develop conclusions and quantify the problem or objective the apply and test the corrective action. Projects are identified by management which appoints a champion who then identifies a Black Belt to execute the process.  The application of Six Sigma by organizations varies and though the root process is the same the means by which the Black Belt gets to a resolution may vary significantly from organization to organization.  

     In addition to the typical use of Six Sigma to solve problems, it has also been applied to design and lean processes as well spawning Lean Sigma and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS).  The logical cycle of the Six Sigma process lends itself to solving a variety of different types of problems.
