STATISTICAL METHODS
Statistical methods and quality go hand in hand. The application of statistics to solve problems and monitor processes is not new, in fact they have been used for decades in many manufacturing industries. Statistics allows us to not only understand what has happened through quantitative means but it also enables us to predict how a process will behave given certain characteristics.
Probably the most commonly used and understood statistical methods is Statistical Process Control (SPC). SPC utilizes control charts to monitor process parameters and allow the operator to observe conditions in the statistics that indicate the process is going out of control or out side its control limits. SPC is a preventive tool that can save companies significant money by preventing the manufacture of defective product by ensuring the process stays in control.
Statistical methods can vary from basic tools like sampling plans to complex statistics like design of experiments (DOE). The application of statistical tools can help a company to understand characteristics and relationships in processes and products. The use of statistics is also essential in understanding aspects of product like reliability, availability, and maintainability. Understanding how a product will behave over time can give an organization an edge over the competition, allowing them to set product performance objectives, test product and analyze the results to ensure products being brought to market meet the performance objectives.
