Dr. Yoji Akao was born in Japan in 1928. Akao graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1948 and received his PhD there as well in 1964. Akao is known for being cofounder of “Quality Function Deployment” (QFD) with the late Dr. Shigeru Mizuno. QFD is a tool used to identify factors that impact customer satisfaction during the design phase, to facilitate a supplier design and thus make a better product with fewer defects. Akao is also credited with developing “Hoshin Kanri” also know as “Total Quality Management” and writing a book on the subject. Additionally, Akao was the recipient of the Deming Prize in 1978, the Distinguished Service Medal of the American Society for Quality in 2001, the Shainin Medal of the American Society for Quality, and other awards from other institutions. Currently, Dr. Akao serves on a variety of committees and has an award of his own, the Akao Prize, for excellence in QFD.
